USA – Bimbo Bakeries USA, a subsidiary of Grupo Bimbo SAB de CV, has closed 28 outlet stores in the northeast United States for undisclosed reasons.

The baker of Arnold, Boboli, Entenmann’s, Lender’s Bagels, Sara Lee and Thomas baked foods said the closings come “after careful analysis and consideration.

Company processes have shifted and products will be redistributed to other locations,” BBU said.

The closed stores include outlets in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.

“Moving forward, we will focus on donating any limited extra product to local food bank partners. We appreciate all of our associates who worked at these stores and are taking steps to help ease them through this transition,” the statement read.

Bimbo, however, noted that consumers can still enjoy their favourite baked goods and can find them by using their product locator.

This comes after its parent company, Grupo Bimbo SAB de CV, in March announced its intention to acquire six additional bakeries in Romania.

According to Romanian business news sources Ziarul Financiar and Profit.ro, the acquisition deal was valued at €100 million (US$108.9 million).

In addition, the Grupo Bimbo snapped up Spain-based Amaritta Food SL, a company focused on the research, development and production of gluten-free bread, in Feb, this year.

Grupo Bimbo described Amaritta as having a “leadership” position in the gluten-free bakery category in Spain.

This acquisition will enable us to continue gaining know-how in this category and lever from this technology and capitalize it in the growth of that high-growth potential in that market,” Servitje said in a conference call with investment analysts in connection with the company’s fourth-quarter financial results.

“As the largest bakery company in the world, it is essential that we adapt to the demands of all our consumers, including those who have very specific needs.”
