SPAIN – Bioflytech, a leading producer of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL), has initiated the production of flours and fats at its newly established facility in Palas de Rei, Galicia, Spain.
This milestone marks a significant achievement for the company, as it becomes the first Spanish supplier to receive regulatory approval for the manufacturing and commercialization of BSFL-based ingredients.
The Palas de Rei facility, announced in the fall of 2023, boasts state-of-the-art infrastructure, equipped with rendering and drying machinery essential for producing flour and fat derived from dried BSFL.
According to a report by the company in the last quarter of 2023, the plant was expected to have a production capacity of 12,000 metric tons per year.
In the coming years, there are plans for additional significant investments in this plant to achieve an annual production of 100,000 metric tons of black soldier fly larvae.
Leveraging dried BSFL from its Fuente Álamo facility in Murcia, Bioflytech aims to cater primarily to the animal feed industry, including pet food and aquaculture feed, while also exploring applications in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
With a focus on innovation, Bioflytech is set to revolutionize the production of protein flours from insects, utilizing tailor-made rendering equipment at its Palas de Rei site.
Plans are underway to further enhance processing capabilities with the installation of additional rendering machinery.
The company’s ambitious expansion strategy includes the development of a comprehensive manufacturing campus in Palas de Rei, encompassing eight facilities dedicated to production, larvae fattening, and compost storage.
Once fully operational, the campus is expected to cover more than 140,000 square meters.
Bioflytech anticipates an annual output of 12,000 tonnes of fresh BSFL following regulatory approvals for larvae fattening, with plans for expansion to 100,000 tonnes per year in subsequent phases.
To support this growth trajectory, the company intends to invest €2.8 million (approximately US$3 million) in enhancing hatchery capacity at its Fuente Álamo facility.
Bioflytech’s commitment to innovation and sustainability is underscored by its ownership under Moira Capital Partners, which acquired a majority stake in the company in 2018.
