CANADA- Canadian authorities have approved Bovaer, a groundbreaking feed ingredient created to significantly reduce methane emissions from dairy and beef cattle.
Developed by DSM-Firmenich, a leading innovator in nutrition, health, and beauty, Bovaer has the potential to empower farmers to make substantial strides in reducing their carbon footprint.
The approval marks a pivotal moment for the nearly 10,000 dairy farmers in Canada, who can now incorporate Bovaer into their operations. This innovative feed ingredient has demonstrated its effectiveness in immediately and significantly reducing methane emissions, with an average reduction of 30% for dairy cows.
Consequently, the overall greenhouse gas footprint per liter of milk is expected to decrease by 10-15%.
Canadian cattle feeders, who manage approximately 3.3 million cattle annually, also stand to benefit. Bovaer has demonstrated an average reduction of 45% in methane emissions for these feedlot beef cattle.
As Bovaer becomes part of the Reducing Enteric Methane Emissions (REME) protocol for beef cattle and the Alberta Fed Cattle protocol, cattle feeders may also access the potential to generate carbon offsets, providing an additional source of income.
Mark van Nieuwland, Vice President of Bovaer, expressed enthusiasm for the market authorization and acknowledged Canada’s crucial role in the development of Bovaer.
The successful completion of a two-year trial with 15,000 beef cattle in Alberta, supported by ERA (Emission Reduction Alberta), demonstrated methane reductions of up to 82%, resulting in substantial carbon savings.
“Canada has been an important part of the development journey of Bovaer. We are therefore excited today to receive the market authorization and appreciate the diligent and timely review by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency,” said van Nieuwland. “This will benefit Canadian farmers, support sustainability efforts, and aid Canada in delivering on its international emissions reduction commitments such as the Global Methane Pledge.”
dsm-firmenich aims to make Bovaer® available to the Canadian dairy and beef sector in the coming weeks and plans to collaborate closely with the feed, dairy, and beef industry to introduce Bovaer® into the market.
