EUROPE- The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has issued a resounding approval for lignosulfonate products as feed additives across all animal species, marking a significant milestone for Borregaard, the sole producer of lignosulfonate and a key player in the reauthorization process.
Borregaard operates one of the world’s most advanced and sustainable biorefineries. By using natural, renewable raw materials, the company produces advanced and environmentally friendly biochemicals that can replace oil-based products.
Over 13 years, Borregaard spearheaded the reauthorization efforts, collaborating closely with EFSA and the EU Commission to compile a comprehensive dossier substantiating the performance and safety of lignosulfonates.
Tom Stylo, Borregaard’s Business Director for Feed Additives, expressed satisfaction with the approval, affirming that it validates the efficacy and safety of their products as feed additives for the foreseeable future.
This reauthorization underscores Borregaard’s commitment to delivering sustainable solutions to the feed industry, with EFSA approving the use of Borregaard’s lignosulfonates as a technological additive (functional group: binders) for all animal species.
Notably, Borregaard proposed a reduction in the maximum content of lignosulfonate in feed for all animal species to 8,000 milligrams per kilogram of complete feed.
This adjustment, supported by two newly submitted tolerance studies, garnered EFSA’s endorsement, affirming the safety of 8,000 milligrams of lignosulfonate per kilogram of complete feed for dairy cows and salmonids, with a margin of safety of at least 1.25.
While previous assessments by the EFSA Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) had determined the safety of lignosulfonate at a maximum level of 10,000 milligrams per kilogram of complete feed for select animal species, the current approval marks an evolution in regulatory standards, reflecting Borregaard’s commitment to product safety and efficacy.
The EFSA’s green light for Borregaard’s lignosulfonate products heralds a new era of innovation and sustainability in the feed industry, reinforcing Borregaard’s position as a pioneering force driving advancements in animal nutrition and welfare.
As feed additives play an increasingly crucial role in enhancing animal health and performance, Borregaard’s continued dedication to research and development underscores its pivotal role in shaping the future of livestock farming.
