ZIMBABWE — Zimbabwe’s government is gearing up for an exceptional winter wheat harvest this year, bolstered by a significant investment in harvesting equipment and strategic partnerships.
The Zimbabwean Agricultural Finance Company (AFC) has procured 193 combine harvesters through its leasing arm in preparation for an exceptional winter wheat harvest this year.
With additional support from private sector partnerships, this investment aims to maximize the potential of the country’s anticipated record-breaking wheat yield.
This significant investment aims to assist farmers in reaping a record harvest projected to exceed 600,000 tonnes, a notable increase from the previous record of 468,000 tonnes set last season.
This year, approximately 121,000 hectares were dedicated to winter wheat cultivation, setting the stage for this impressive yield.
Professor Obert Jiri, the Permanent Secretary for Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development, underscored the government’s commitment to supporting farmers during this crucial period.
“We are prepared to assist farmers in harvesting wheat on time, ensuring that no wheat is compromised by early rains or veld fires,” Jiri affirmed.
While some farmers have already commenced the harvesting process, the bulk of the wheat will require another three to four weeks to reach optimal harvest conditions.
“We are approaching the final stages of our wheat production season. Although some areas have started harvesting small plots, the bulk of the wheat will need a few more weeks to mature. We are fully prepared and optimistic that, barring early rains, we will complete the harvest in a timely manner,” Jiri added.
To ensure a smooth and efficient harvesting process, the government has implemented a robust logistical system. Trucks are on standby to transport the wheat as soon as a combine harvester finishes in one area, maintaining a steady workflow and minimizing downtime.
Additionally, a new digital tracking system for harvest logistics has been introduced. This system will provide real-time updates on combine harvester locations, progress, and logistical needs, enhancing operational efficiency and resource allocation.
Recent reports highlight that the deployment of advanced harvesting technology and improved logistical coordination are key factors contributing to Zimbabwe’s successful wheat production season.
The new digital tracking system, in particular, is expected to address previous challenges related to harvest logistics and boost efficiency.
