MEXICO – Grupo Bimbo SAB de CV, the renowned Mexican multinational food company, has successfully reduced its Scope 1 carbon emissions by 9% through a sustainable mobility strategy, according to the company’s 2023 annual report, “Behind our actions.”

“By the end of 2023, we will have more than 2,690 electric vehicles globally, maintaining our position as the company with the largest electric fleet in Latin America,” the company emphasized its achievements in expanding its electric vehicle fleet, which allowed Grupo Bimbo to avoid emitting over 22,081 tons of CO2 annually.

Regarding Scope 2 carbon emissions, Grupo Bimbo reported reaching 100% renewable electric energy usage by the end of 2023.

The company highlighted the global transition to renewable energy, with countries like Russia, Morocco, Kazakhstan, China, and South Korea converting to 100% renewable energy through acquiring renewable energy certificates (iRECs).

Additionally, Guatemala transitioned to renewable energy via a hydroelectric power purchase agreement. The operational launch of the Hilda wind farm in Canada further contributed to these efforts, making 50% of Grupo Bimbo’s operations renewable.

Scope 3 emissions also saw a reduction of 3.7% in 2023, achieved through collaborations with suppliers. Grupo Bimbo has proactively worked with its outsourced fleet operators, encouraging the transition to cleaner technologies such as electric vehicles powered by renewable energy and low-carbon alternative fuels.

By 2025, Grupo Bimbo aims to source 100% of its electric energy from renewable sources and plans to reduce Scope 1 emissions by 50% and Scope 3 emissions by 28% by 2030.

Since 2012, Grupo Bimbo has been dedicated to minimizing its environmental impact, focusing on maximizing the use of renewable electricity and implementing energy efficiency projects to optimize resource usage.

In packaging, Grupo Bimbo reported that 93% of its packaging materials were recyclable in 2023, with plans to increase this to 95% soon.

Through various initiatives, the company significantly reduced approximately 272 tonnes of plastic in 2023.

Highlights of these efforts include a 39% reduction in packaging weight for hamburger bread in the US food service sector and similar reductions across various regions and product lines.

Grupo Bimbo aims for 100% recyclable, biodegradable, or compostable packaging by 2025 and for all packaging to support a circular economy by 2030.

The company’s packaging optimization projects are integral to its strategy, ensuring product quality and safety while preventing waste throughout the value chain.

Grupo Bimbo also focuses on regenerative agriculture. By 2023, the company registered approximately 170,000 hectares under its regenerative agriculture program, exceeding its goal by 13%.

This included significant increases in corn, potatoes, and wheat cultivation. Grupo Bimbo aims to expand this program to 200,000 hectares by 2030 and to source 100% of its key ingredients from land cultivated with regenerative practices by 2050.
