USA -Mondelēz International is taking significant steps toward sustainability by introducing new packaging for its Triscuit crackers.
This initiative, launched on September 18, 2024, aims to reduce environmental impact through innovative use of recycled materials.
The company has partnered with Berry Global and LyondellBasell to incorporate 50% certified circular plastic into the protective film liners of Triscuit packaging in the United States and Canada.
This move complements the outer box, made from 100% recycled paperboard with 35% post-consumer recycled content.
The new packaging solution is expected to divert over one million pounds of plastic waste from landfills annually.
This aligns with Mondelēz’s broader commitment to sustainable practices. By 2025, the company aims to achieve 5% recycled plastic content in its packaging.
Caitlin Schell, Marketing Director for Triscuit at Mondelēz International, stated, “Partnering with Berry and embracing advanced recycling technology for our product represents exciting momentum towards our brand’s commitment to more sustainable packaging.”
She emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in keeping materials in use and out of the environment.
The initiative is part of Mondelēz’s ongoing strategy to support a circular economy for packaging.
This strategy focuses on three key areas: reducing packaging waste, evolving packaging design to be recyclable and utilise recycled materials, and improving systems for better collection and recycling infrastructure.
The company aims for approximately 98% of its packaging to be designed for recyclability by 2025. They report that about 96% of their packaging meets this standard.
Wesley Porter, Business Development Director at Berry Global, highlighted the significance of this collaboration: “We are committed to blending our unique expertise and world-class facilities to deliver innovative, sustainable solutions that tackle our customers’ most common and pressing packaging hurdles.”
He noted that creating demand for advanced recycling solutions is crucial for expanding markets for polyethylene-based flexible packaging.
Mondelēz’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond just Triscuit crackers. The company has joined several initiatives aimed at tackling plastic waste globally.
In 2020, they signed a manifesto calling for a United Nations treaty on plastic pollution alongside twenty-nine other major corporations.
They also became a signatory of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, which seeks to address plastic waste at its source.
This recent development reflects a growing trend among food manufacturers to adopt more sustainable practices amid increasing consumer demand for environmentally friendly products.
As consumers become more aware of the environmental impacts of packaging waste, companies like Mondelēz are responding by innovating their product offerings.
Mondelēz International’s latest efforts in enhancing Triscuit cracker packaging demonstrate a commitment to sustainability and set a precedent for industry-wide change.
By leveraging partnerships and advanced recycling technologies, they are paving the way toward a more sustainable future while continuing to provide high-quality snacks to their consumers.
As Caitlin Schell aptly put it, “There is no time to waste,” emphasizing the urgency of addressing environmental challenges through innovative solutions.
