UK – Mondi, a prominent player in sustainable packaging and paper solutions, has partnered with Welton, Bibby and Baron (WBB) to introduce a new line of recyclable paper-based bags for pre-packed bread.

This collaboration addresses the growing consumer demand for environmentally friendly packaging while ensuring freshness.

The announcement, made on September 24, 2024, highlights Mondi’s commitment to sustainability in the food packaging sector.

The new paper bags are crafted from Mondi’s Functional Barrier Paper Reduce, which is known for its strength and barrier properties.

WBB is converting this innovative material into brown and white paper bags suitable for various pre-packed fresh bread products.

According to Mondi, the base kraft paper is produced from responsibly sourced fibres and is coated in-house to maintain essential barrier properties against water vapour, grease, and moisture.

This ensures the bread remains fresh, soft, and moist while providing a recyclable alternative to traditional plastic packaging.

Mick Robinson, Business Solutions Manager for Functional Paper and Films at Mondi emphasized the importance of this initiative:

“With our MAP2030 sustainability targets, we are fully committed to developing circular packaging options to satisfy our customers and their end users, who are looking for more sustainable and convenient solutions in their shopping habits.”

He further noted that long-standing partnerships enable Mondi to support brands and retailers in their sustainability efforts.

The design of these bags also reflects a premium aesthetic. Both options feature windows that allow consumers to see the product inside.

The brown bag includes a glassine window that can be recycled alongside the paper bag, while the white bag has a detachable film window that can be disposed of separately.

This thoughtful design ensures compliance with recycling standards set by the On-Pack Recycling Label Scheme (OPRL), allowing consumers across the UK to recycle them easily via kerbside collection.

Andrew Lockyear, Technical Manager at WBB, shared insights into the collaborative process:

“Close collaboration with the Mondi team meant we had access to a lot of expertise throughout the whole process, enabling us to turn around this brilliant result in such a short time frame.”

He also mentioned plans for future cooperation with Mondi to enhance existing solutions and stay ahead of regulatory requirements.

This initiative is critical as consumers increasingly seek sustainable options in their daily purchases.

The shift towards recyclable packaging meets market demand and aligns with broader environmental goals.

Companies like Mondi and WBB lead the way in sustainable practices, setting an example for others in the industry.

Mondi’s partnership with Welton Bibby Baron marks a significant step towards more sustainable food packaging solutions.

By combining innovative materials with consumer-friendly designs, this initiative enhances product visibility and promotes recycling.

As Mick Robinson stated, “We are actively supporting brands and retailers in their steps towards sustainability,” reflecting a collective commitment to reducing environmental impact while meeting consumer needs.
