CAMEROON – Olam Agri has announced its intention to invest in Cameroon’s wheat flour and pasta production to meet the changing food consumption patterns, promote economic development, and contribute to efforts to improve food security in the country.
Mr. Veeresh Mallikarjun Hiremath, Olam Agri’s Senior Vice President and Country Head for Cameroon, was speaking to Business Cameroon about Olam Agri’s operations, contributions, and significant investments in Cameroon through its wheat milling business.
According to Hiremath, Olam Agri has planned to increase their milling capacity in the country and venture into pasta production to meet the growing demand for high-quality pasta products.
The wheat milling industry in Cameroon has experienced substantial growth and transformation in recent years. Olam Agri is currently one of the market leaders in the flour category in Cameroon.
Olam further aims to tap into the growing milling sector, recognizing that Cameroon occupies a pivotal position where agriculture and modern food processing intersect.
Elaborating on their interest in Cameroon, Hiremath explained that the country’s strategic geographical location, growing population, and increasing demand for wheat products were the main factors driving their investment decision.
Currently, Olam’s milling business in Cameroon has achieved a significant milestone in the production of wheat flour with their advanced mill located in Bekoko, on the outskirts of Douala.
According to Olam, the highly automated plant produces wheat flour products that cater to market requirements, including beignet, standard baguette, premium baguette, and toast bread. These products are sold under the brand name of Bijou, which is a household name in the country.
Therefore, Hiremath added, Olam’s investment in Cameroon signifies our commitment to supporting food security, creating employment opportunities for the country’s dynamic young workforce, and contributing to the country’s economic growth.
“We believe we are well positioned to extract significant operating leverage to further enhance our competitive strength in the country,” he said.
Hiremath highlighted that Olam continues to innovate and collaborate. It aims to further strengthen its position and create lasting value for all stakeholders in Cameroon.
Olam Agri is considering entering the production and distribution of flour products, which have become essential parts of Cameroon’s food supply chain. This move aims to cater to the diverse culinary preferences of the population while also contributing to the country’s agricultural development goals.
