TANZANIA – The Tanzanian government has unveiled an ambitious plan, a new strategy to expand fish farming in ponds and rice paddies in a forward-thinking move to enhance food security and diversify income streams for rural communities.
The initiative, announced by Tanzania’s Livestock and Fisheries Minister, Abdallah Ulega, during his visit to the Mpitimbi B Fish Farming Group in Songea District, Ruvuma Region, seeks to increase fish stocks while providing a sustainable livelihood for local communities.
“The strategy allows us to spread knowledge and encourage more people to engage in this type of farming. This initiative will not only enhance fish availability but also increase household incomes,” Minister Ulega stated.
According to Ulega, one of the unique aspects of the new strategy is the integration of fish farming into rice paddies, a model of “rice-fish farming” already proven successful in other parts of the world, including Asia.
This approach leverages the natural ecosystem of rice paddies to support aquaculture, reducing the need for additional water resources while improving fish and rice yields.
“This approach has the potential to significantly increase fish production while alleviating pressure on natural fish stocks,” Ulega noted.
He emphasized that traditional fishing methods, which have strained natural ecosystems, may benefit from the sustainable alternative that rice-fish farming presents.
Minister Ulega emphasized that youth participation is essential to the success of this strategy. The government’s plan to establish demonstration farms across the country aims to equip young people with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in aquaculture.
The demonstration farms will serve as innovation hubs, showcasing modern aquaculture techniques such as advanced feeding methods, disease management strategies, and water-efficient practices.
Songea District Commissioner Wilman Kapenjama voiced his support for the initiative, highlighting its potential to uplift young people economically.
“If the initiative succeeds, it will greatly benefit many young people economically. Our district is ready to collaborate with the ministry to implement fish farming on rice paddies, ensuring that the people of Songea and surrounding areas have a reliable source of fish for consumption at all times.”
